Norman Weiler

Norman Weiler, age 87 of Ogallala, passed away on Sunday, February 22, 2009 at the Indian Hills Manor Nursing Home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 24th at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church with Pastor David Dobbertien officiating. Burial will be in the Ogallala Cemetery.

Norman was born June 12, 1921 the son of Herman and Gertrude (Rohrkasse) Weiler. He received his education from the Seward Public Schools, graduating in 1939 from the Seward High School.

Norman joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in September, 1941, and after training, flew missions from England over Germany until his plane was shot down on May 1, 1943. He was a prisoner of war of the Germans for two years and eleven days, arriving home, in Seward on May 31, 1945. Norman married Ione Hermann on July 8, 1945.

After his discharge from the Royal Canadian Air Force as a captain, he was associated with his father in a Gamble Store in Seward, owned and operated two Standard filling stations, worked as a car salesman and was employed as an appraiser for the Board of Educational Land and Funds (School Land) for nine years and was transferred to Ogallala in 1956. After he left the employment of the Board of Educational Lands he became part owner in the Searle-Weiler garage. He owned and operated the Tastee Snack Café for many years. Norman was elected to the Ogallala City Council, member of the Airport Authority, member of the V.F.W. and served as a Justice of the Peace. In 1974, he was elected Keith County Assessor, taking office on January 2, 1975 and retired on May 31, 1984.

Norman was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Ogallala.

His hobbies were fishing, golfing and gardening. Norman enjoyed the many fishing trips to Canada with friends.

Survivors include his wife, Ione Weiler of Ogallala; brothers in law and sisters in law, Duane and Neva Axen of Tucson, AZ, Vernon and Irene Hermann of Lincoln, NE, Willian D. Hermann of Berkley, CA, Rena Woodcome of Lancaster, MA, Lemoine and Geraldine Anderson of McCook, NE and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Gertrude Weiler and his sister, Lorraine Cook.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 – 6:00 p.m. on Monday at the Gubser Funeral Home and at the church prior to services on Tuesday.
