Millie Corfield

 

Mildred Belle Hiner Corfield, age 92, of Arthur, died Feb. 17, 2011, at the Ogallala Community Hospital.

 

Funeral services will be held Monday, Feb. 21, at the Arthur Baptist Church at 1:30 p.m. with Pastor Ben Keene officiating.  Burial will be in the Arthur Cemetery.

 

Millie was born April 9, 1918, in the family home in Valley County, near Ord, Nebraska, the daughter of Charles and Ina Laura (Dennis) Hiner. She moved with her family to Arthur County in August of 1919, where she lived the remainder of her life.

 

Millie attended Melrose School through eighth grade.  Although she was never able to attend high school, at the age of 35 she took the GED test and earned a provisional teaching certificate, working each summer toward earning her college degree in elementary education, which she completed in1973.  Millie taught for 29 years, the last 13 in the Arthur Upper Room teaching sixth, seventh, and eighth grades.

 

On April 12, 1940, Millie married Erle Corfield in Ogallala, Nebraska.  They worked on various ranches in Keith and Arthur Counties before moving to the ranch home 11 miles south of Arthur where they raised their five children.

 

After retiring from teaching in 1983, Millie became very active in church activities, garden and extension club activities.  She always raised large gardens, quilted, sewed, and crocheted.

 

In 2000, Millie moved into Arthur.  In 2007 she moved in with her daughter Laurel and for the past year had resided at Wel-Life in Ogallala.

 

Millie is survived by her 5 children: Joyce and her husband Gary Scofield, of Ogallala; Erle Dean and his wife Sally of Oshkosh; Jerry of Arthur; Jim and his wife Linette of Arnold; and Laurel and her husband Ken Kennedy of Ogallala;

 

15 grandchildren: Terri Scofield Gaeddert, Darla Scofield Sobotka, Rodney Scofield; Winston Corfield, Casper Corfield; Jeffrey Thomas, Joanna Corfield Shalla, Lisa Corfield McKeag, Jeremy Corfield; Danielle Kennedy, Kori Kennedy Hicks, Tana Kennedy, Jess Kennedy, Riley Kennedy; and Kirby Corfield; and 22 great grandchildren, and one sister-in-law, Artie Corfield, of Roscoe.

 

She was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 48 years, Erle Corfield,  parents Charles and Ina Laura Hiner, 4 sisters: Zella Sykes, Amy Copley, Opal Nielson, and Erma Louise, in infancy; 4 brothers: Edwin, Raymond, Dick, Chester (Jack) Hiner; daughter –in-law Norma Corfield, and 2 great-grandchildren: ShaylaScofield and JD Corfield.
