Mary Markussen

            Mary Peyton Markussen, age 87 of Ogallala, passed away at her home on Thursday, August 14, 2008. Mary was born June 13, 1921 in St. Louis, Missouri the daughter of Joseph and Martha (Katowski) Hart. 

She met Floyd “Shorty” Markussen on May 13, 1942 in Chicago while he was serving in the U.S. Navy.  The couple was married on June 26, 1944 at Elizabeth City, North Carolina.  Following his discharge they moved to Ogallala in 1946.  They lived in Milford, Nebraska while Shorty was enrolled in trade school for tool and die work.  They moved to Kansas City, Missouri in 1953 where Shorty was employed by General Motors and in 1955 they moved to San Diego, CA where they resided until their retirement in 1991 except for three years when they returned to Ogallala. 

Since moving back to Ogallala in 1991 Mary had enjoyed the small town life shared with her many friends and her extended Markussen family.  Shorty preceeded her in death in December of 2001.  She is survived by two sisters and a host of nieces and nephews and brother and sister in laws.

            Memorial Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, August 19^th at the Gubser Funeral Chapel with Reverend Phil Ewert officiating.  Inurnment will be in the Ft. McPherson National Cemetery at a later date.  There will be no visitation.  A memorial has been established to the Ogallala Handibus in her memory.
