Martin Wellman
Martin Joseph Wellman, age 92, a former longtime Roscoe resident, passed away on Thursday, June 30, 2011 in Kearney, Nebraska. He was born March 24, 1919 at Ogallala, the son of Frederick and Catherine (Schlipf) Wellman. Following his graduation from high school Martin was employed for the Cessna Aircraft Company in Wichita, Kansas as an aviation mechanic until enlisting in the Army Air Corp. He served with the 14th Air Force’s 27th Troop Carrier Squadron in the China Theatre from 1942-1946 with service in Burma and China and India. Martin married Elaine Wiest on November 14, 1956. The couple purchased the Richter property west of Roscoe where Martin farmed for over twenty five years. During the winter months he worked at the McCreath Standard Station in Ogallala. He had been a longtime member of St. Luke’s Catholic Church. Martin fought back from a severe stroke in 2005, regaining a great majority of his lost physical ability. He courageously accepted each day with fortitude, with continual faith in God, with hope, and with love for his family. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elaine; two brothers, Sylvester and Ferdinand Wellman; and four sisters, Amelia and Mary Wellman, Clara Mollett and Josephine Koelzer. He is survived by five children, Dave (Anne) Wellman of Cozad, NE, Kathy (Saad) Eways of Austin, Texas, Marsha (Bill) Border of Massillon, Ohio, Barb Wellman of Kearney, Nebraska and Paula Wellman of Fredericksburg, Ohio; seven grandchildren and two great granddaughters; and one sister, Dorothy Wellman of Lincoln, NE
A Rosary will be recited at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 7th , followed by A Mass of Christian Burial with Father Bryan Ernest as celebrant. Burial will be in the Ogallala Cemetery with a military tribute presented by the Keith County Veteran’s Organizations.
Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the Gubser Funeral Home and at the church prior to services on Thursday. Online condolences may be sent at gubserfuneralhome.com. Memorials may be given to the Food for the Poor in lieu of flowers in Martin’s memory. Gubser Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
