Marie  Atwood

             Inez Marie Atwood (Piel) of Baton Rouge, LA, passed away on Saturday, October 2, 2010, at the age of 94.

            She was born in Blue Hill, Nebraska on February 6, 1916, the daughter of Frank R. and August A. (Witte) Piel.  Marie was a graduate of the Thedford High School in Thedford, Nebraska where she was the class valedictorian.  She received her teacher's certificate from Chadron State Teachers College, and received her Bachelors degree from Kearney State College.  She was married to Ray Atwood in 1936.

            She was preceded in death by her husband Ray; sons, Clarence and Larry; brothers, William, Robert, Derrel and Howard; and sisters Margaret and Ruby.

            She is survived by sons Ronnie and wife Jo Ann Atwood of Baton Rouge, LA and Rod and wife Linda Atwood of Canal Fulton, OH; granddaughters, Rhonda, Monica and Lara; grandsons, Scott and Austin.  Great grandchildren, Jason Kuhns, Laura Albarez, Susan Turk, Eddie Day, Justin, Jeremy, Tyler and Josep; and great-great grandchildren, Cole Turk and Hayden Kuhns.

            Marie had fond memories of growing up on a ranch in the sand hills where she rode a horse to school and lived for a time in a sod house.  She also enjoyed her friends from high school and for years never missed her class reunions.  She was a school teacher and taught at schools throughout Nebraska including one of the last one room schools in the state.  She was a dedicated wife to Ray and together they owned and operated motels in Colorado and Nebraska.  She was a gentle and loving person who will be missed by many.

            Services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 6th at the Ogallala Church of Christ with Pastor George Robison officiating.  Burial was in the Ogallala Cemetery.  Online condolences may be sent at gubserfuneralhome.com.
