Glen
Richard Bazata was born on December 8, 1952 in Columbus, Nebraska to
Ervin and Elaine Bazata.
On April
8, 2010 following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer, Glen
was called to his heavenly home.
Having
moved to Omaha, Nebraska with his family at the age of 3, Glen
attended Catholic grade schools and graduated from Rummel High
School in Omaha, where he was a standout athlete, excelling at
baseball, awarded Baseball Player of the Year as a Senior. Glen
participated in many other sports including basketball and tennis.
After graduating from high school in 1971, he attended the
University of Nebraska at Lincoln where he met his future wife, Mary
Ann Downin. They were united in marriage on September 1, 1973 at St.
James Catholic Church in Omaha, Nebraska.
Glen was drafted into the U.S. Army in August 1972 and served
honorably for two years as a military policeman. He also served his
country as Security Supervisor in the Air Force National Guard. Glen
earned the Air Force Longevity Service Award and was honorably
discharged on April 15th, 1978.
While continuing his education at the University of Nebraska at
Lincoln, Glen worked at Bryan Memorial Hospital in the respiratory
therapy department. In 1976, Glen and Mary moved back to Omaha,
where Glen completed the Respiratory Therapist program at Immanuel
Hospital. In conjunction, he received a Bachelors of Biological
Sciences Degree from Midland Lutheran College in Fremont.
In 1978, Glen and Mary moved to Ogallala, Nebraska where he
established a respiratory therapy department at Ogallala Community
Hospital, raised a family and maintained a residence until his
death. In 1982, Glen started Good Air Home Medical Equipment. Over
the next twenty-six years, his business grew and developed to serve
hundreds of clients, and covered a large area of western Nebraska
and northeastern Colorado. Following the sale of Good Air in 2008,
Glen and Mary established a second home in Goodyear, Arizona for
their retirement.
Glen was a member of St. Luke’s Catholic Church and the Knights of
Columbus Council # 4979. Also, he was a lifetime member and past
president of the Ogallala Optimist Club, past president of the
Ogallala Baseball Association and served as president of the
Ogallala Country Club Board of Directors. He was a member the
Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks and the American Legion
Post #135, serving in the Ogallala Honor Guard for many years.
Glen was well-known and respected in the community, treating friends
and strangers alike with kindness--his handshake as good as his
word.
He was an avid sports enthusiast and a lifelong Cornhusker football
fan. He coached his children in all levels of youth baseball and
softball. In his spare time, Glen enjoyed pheasant and goose
hunting, fishing, golf and reading. He loved being a Grandpa and is
now reunited with his beloved grandson, Ethan Glen Bazata.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; his three children, Brian and wife
Heidi Bazata of Cozad, Nebraska; Alison and husband Fernando
Gutierrez of Omaha, Nebraska; and Brenton Bazata, also of Omaha; his
parents, Ervin and Elaine Bazata of Surprise, Arizona; his two
sisters Diane and husband Gene Carlon of Prosper, Texas and Kimberly
and husband Brian Dolphin of Omaha; three grandchildren, Jacob,
Elizabeth and Joshua Stallbaumerof Cozad, Nebraska; several nieces
and nephews; and many dear friends. He was preceded in death by his
grandson, Ethan Glen Bazata and his maternal and fraternal
grandparents.
Funeral services, arranged by Gubser Funeral Home, were held on
Monday, April 12, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Lukes Catholic Church in
Ogallala, NE, Father Ernest Bryan officiating. A wake service was
held on Sunday, April 11, 2010. The committal service will be at the
Cozad Cemetery on April 12, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. |
