Ed Gregory

Edward Arthur Gregory, age 86 of Ogallala, passed away at his home Tuesday morning, September 29, 2009.

 

He was born June 19, 1923 at Grand Island, Nebraska the son of Earl Grover and Laura Mae (Hageman) Gregory. Ed was a paper carrier for the Grand Island Independent as a boy and a member of the Boy Scouts of America. Following his graduation from the Grand Island High School he married Virginia Mae Stoppkotte on January 5, 1942.

 

He was a member of the U.S. Army Corp during World War II and was stationed in England as part of a bomber ground crew. Following his discharge he returned to Grand Island and worked for the R.E.A. as a lineman. The couple moved to Ogallala in 1948. Ed was employed by Consumers Public Power and for his father as a licensed electrician, for B & J Petroleum and for the City of Ogallala Parks and Recreation Department until his retirement.

 

Ed loved the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and many sports. He had received many Master Angular Awards for trout fishing and had been featured in the Nebraskaland Magazine. He had played semi-pro baseball in Grand Island for the St. Louis Cardinal’s farm team. He loved to travel and explore different area of the United States and Canada. He was instrumental in forming the first AA group in Ogallala. He remained active in Boy Scouts for many years and was a lifetime member of the American Legion, V.F.W. and the NRA.

 

Survivors include:

Two sons, Edward (Ginny) Gregory of Cedar Hills, MO

David (Connie) Gregory of Fountain Hills, AZ

Three daughters, Sue (Jack) Baker of Ogallala

Pam (Rick) Mathews of North Platte

Shelly Gregory of Ogallala

10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren

Sister, Anna Mae Becker of St. Paul, NE

 

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Virginia; a brother, Calvin Gregory; and sisters Sharon Gregory Peters and Vivian Gregory Ashwege.

Memorial services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, October 2nd at the Gubser Funeral Chapel with Pastor Duane Dunwoody officiating. Internment was in the Ogallala Cemetery. Online condolences may be sent at gubserfuneralhome.com. Gubser Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
