Ed Cobb
Ed Cobb, age 94 of Ogallala, passed away Friday morning, April 30, 2010 at the Ogallala Community Hospital. He was born June 30, 1915 on the family farm in Osborne County, Kansas, the son of Ernest D. and Alta (Law) Cobb.
Ed graduated from the eighth grade on June 1, 1928 and from the Luray High School on May 20, 1932. He lettered in football and started at Weslyn College on a football scholarship.
He married Barbara Myers on August 10, 1936 at Salina, Kansas. The couple made their first home in Salina and later moved to Abilene, Kansas. In 1944 they moved to Ogallala to supply tires to the company resurfacing Kingsley Dam.
Ed served as president of the Ogallala School Board in 1955 and was able to hand his son, Ben, his high school diploma. He served as the president of the Ogallala Chamber of Commerce in the 1970's and was a member of the Ogallala Rotary Club. Ed was a longtime member of the Ogallala First United Methodist Church and had been a member of the Masonic Lodge in Abilene, Kansas for over fifty years.
In 1970 Ed sold his tire business to Robert Barrett as the L & M Tire Service Center, Inc. He took time off work to build a cabin at Lake McConaughy where he enjoyed many happy days with friends and family boating and water sports. He sold cars for Norman Fuller for awhile and then went into the real estate business in December of 1970 and started his own agency in 1972. His daughter Diane joined the firm in 1974 and took over operation of the agency in 1983. Ed retired and started spending six months of the year in Sun City, Arizona.
He loved to play golf and while legally blind carded a "Hole In One" at an Arizona golf course. In 1995 Ed stopped going to Arizona and made his home with his daughter, Diane. While back in Ogallala his good friend, Jerry Raether, continued to take him golfing for the next seven or eight years.

Diane Cobb England of Ogallala Grandsons, Matthew Benton Cobb of Los Angeles, CA Daniel Cobb of Seattle, WA Great grandchildren, Nicole Walburn of Ogallala Matthew Benton Lapp of Ogallala Lochlan Cobb, Tate Cobb and McDonald Cobb of Los Angeles, CA Great-great grandchildren, Hayden S. Walburn and Trinity D. Walburn of Ogallala Step son, Rod and wife Judy Shelburne of Ogallala Daughter in law, Ann Cobb Son in law, Jeffrey Lapp
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara Myers Cobb on June 1, 1980; his second wife, Lorna Shelburne Cobb in January, 1993; and his granddaughter, Kathryn Anne England Lapp on December 23, 2008.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, May 3rd at the Ogallala First United Methodist Church with Pastor James Miller officiating. Burial will be in the Ogallala Cemetery.
