Cloyd Miller

Cloyd Hubert Miller, age 68 of Paxton, passed away Saturday evening, December 13, 2008 at the Indian Hills Manor Nursing Home in Ogallala.

Cloyd was born August 30, 1940 the son of Ernest and Ola (Gordon) Miller at his grandparents Gordon’s house they homesteaded in 1909 in the Sand hills north of Paxton.

A Paxton businessman, Hubert Kildare, brought Dr. Kish to the Gordon’s home to deliver Cloyd, hence accounting for his middle name of Hubert.

He attended the first and second grades in his own home taught by his mother. A trailer school house was built and set in the front yard of the Miller’s home where Lowell Rudd taught Cloyd and his siblings, Lloyd, Fay and Boyd. When Cloyd was in the eighth grade the trailer was moved near the Birdwood Creek and Cloyd rode a horse to attend school there where his teacher was Zepher Kramer. He attended one year of high school in Paxton.

As a teenager he worked for his brother Floyd on the Harvey Lawler Ranch. At age fifteen he began doing construction work in South Dakota. While employed with the Missouri Valley Construction Company he worked in Kansas, Oklahoma and in Ft. Worth, Texas where he helped build a large airport. Cloyd worked on the entire construction of Interstate 80 starting in Waco and ending at the Nebraska state line. He was a very good cement finisher. In the winters he worked for Gerry-Melkus in Grand Island.

On May 6, 1961 he was united in marriage to Dancie Keys of Halsey, Nebraska in Rapid City, SD. The couple was later divorced. Cloyd returned to Paxton and worked for Toney Krajewski at the feed lots in Ogallala, for Paul Gries irrigating near Paxton and working cattle for Carl Thompson at Hershey. He later was employed by Titan Industries in Paxton until his retirement in 2007. He had been a resident of Indian Hills Manor since October of 2008.

The highlight of Cloyd’s day was laughing and visiting with his many friends.
