Avon Larson

Avon LaVerne Larson, age 90, beloved husband of Orva (Kampfe) Larson, passed away Sunday morning, January 13, 2008 at the Ogallala Community Hospital.

Avon was born March 13, 1917, in Dawson County, southwest of Gothenburg, Nebraska. He moved to Brule with his parents, Adel and Ellen Larson, in February of 1926. Avon graduated from the Brule High School in 1934 and attended the Hastings Business College for one year.

On June 16, 1939 he was united in marriage to Orva Kampfe. The couple was married for nearly sixty nine years. They resided in Brule where they raised two sons and a daughter. Avon was the retired owner of Larson Oil Company in Brule, a business he took over from his father in 1942 and operated until November of 1985.

Avon was a charter member of the Brule Lions Club and was active in the organization for fifty five years. He served several terms on the village board and was the founding president of the Brule Athletic Club. Formed in 1949, the organization was instrumental in adding lights to the town baseball field. He was a lifelong member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Brule. In August of 2006, he and Orva served as Grand Marshalls of the 82nd Annual Brule Days Parade.

Avon was a member of the Platte Valley Civic Music Association and the North Platte Civic Music Association for many years. He enjoyed all types of music with Orva and they especially appreciated classical piano. Later in life Avon worked with wood in his home shop and created a wife variety of beautiful wooden pieces.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Elva Brase and brothers, Clarence and Ellsworth Larson.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 17, 2008 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Brule with Pastor Robert Pierce officiating. Burial will be in the Brule Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the Gubser Funeral Home. A memorial has been established to the Brule Volunteer Fire Department of St. John’s Lutheran Church in his memory. Online condolences may be sent at gubserfuneralhome.com.
