Alice Volberding

Alice Volberding, age 100 of Ogallala, passed away on Friday, September 18, 2009.

She was born December 5, 1908 on a farm south of Ogallala where she spent her childhood days attending District # 48 school. After the closing of the country school she and her brothers drove into Ogallala and finished their high school years in town where she graduated with the class of 1925.

On December 19, 1926 she married George Volberding. They were engaged in farming for three years with her father and later moved to Akron, Colorado. In 1929 they moved back to Ogallala where they rented a farm south of town. She worked hard picking corn by hand and feeding hogs and raising four children. In the 1940’s they purchased a farm south of Brule where they remained until they retired and moved to Ogallala. She was a member of the Lutheran Church in Brule and Ogallala for many years. She was a Charter member of the Pleasant Vail Club in Brule until all the members became too old and it was no longer held. She loved to go to the Senior Center and was a member of RSVP for twenty years.

On June 17, 1982, her husband George died, but she remained in her home and loved to cook and have visits with her children and many relatives. Every year her brothers and a sister tried to get together for reminiscing and lots of good food. She did lots of ceramics and crafts of all kinds in her spare time. She also liked to work in the yard with her flowers until she was no longer able. Also in her younger years she loved to bowl and often played marbles with her friends.
